A Supported Independent Living (SIL) Success With Maple Community Services

When Alexis walked through the front door of his new Supported Independent Living home, beaming, chatty, and already planning where his favourite things would go, we knew it.
This wasn’t just a move. It was a milestone. After months of waiting, hitting roadblocks, and living in a space that never truly felt like home, Alexis finally walked into a place that was his. A place where he could breathe, settle, and start fresh. And Maple was proud to be the provider who made it happen. Here’s how it all came together.
The Smile That Said “I’m Home” SIL Success with Maple
When Alexis first came to us, he’d been living in a boarding-style home with 14 other people. He’d tried to make it work, but the environment just didn’t suit him. He wasn’t getting along with the other residents, and the support he was receiving was limited. He had no real structure, no independence and no growth. It was the kind of setup that might tick a box on paper, but in real life, it just wasn’t working.
Finding NDIS SIL Accommodation Close to Family
For Alexis, there was one thing he knew for sure: he wanted to live close to his family. Being near the people he loved gave him a sense of calm and security. And after a tough year, that meant everything. Unfortunately for Alexis, no NDIS provider was willing to go out of their way to find a SIL home in his preferred area.
Well… no one except Maple. During the intake process we noticed that location mattered just as much as the support and made sure we helped Alexis find NDIS housing close to his family.
Overcoming Challenges in the NDIS SIL Onboarding Process
We initially thought our modern, spacious SIL accommodation in Liverpool, NSW would be a great fit. As things moved forward we discovered that while it was a great fit, it wasn’t the perfect fit. The home had existing participants and dynamics that didn’t quiet match Alexis’ preferences and needs. While most NDIS providers walk away when a placement becomes too complex, we kept searching for a SIL solution to meet his needs.
Thanks to the trust Alexis and his support team had in us, they were willing to wait a little bit longer while we found the best possible option.
How Maple Finds SIL Homes That Tick Every Box
Luckily we didn’t need to keep them waiting, because behind the team got to work and quickly a SIL property that met all of Alexis’ goals.
The SIL home featured:
- A self-contained granny flat
- Close to family
- Walking distance to shops and public transport
- Calm, private, and perfect for someone seeking independence
We welcomed Alexis to tour the home, the placement was confirmed and it was everything Alexis had hoped for!

Finding A SIL Home To Belong
When we told Alexis the accommodation had been secured, his face said it all: a huge, beaming smile and a level of excitement that filled the room. After months of uncertainty, this wasn’t just about a new place to live. It was about belonging somewhere and starting over, on his terms.
Moving day was just as special. Alexis lit up as he walked through the front door, already imagining where to place his belongings. There was a joy in his voice as he talked about setting up the space just the way he liked it.
“He wasn’t just moving in, he was claiming the space as his own,” said his Intake Officer. “You could see the relief and excitement in every step.”
How Alexis Is Settling Into His New SIL Home
Since the move, Alexis has settled in beautifully. We are in constant contact with our SIL residents, and at our first check-in he shared that his first night was the best sleep he’d had in a long time. And now? He’s started working on goals that had felt impossible before. From learning to manage routines on his own, to feeling more in control of his future.
What This SIL Journey Meant to Maple’s Team
Alexis’ story is a powerful reminder that SIL isn’t just about housing, it’s about hope, choice, and dignity. At Maple Community Services, we believe every person deserves a SIL home that reflects who they are and what matters most to them.
A Word from the Intake Officer Who Helped Make It Happen
“I’ll never forget Alexis’ face when he saw the flat. He’d been trying to find a place for four months with no luck. Just knowing that we were able to turn that around and give him a space that feels like home, honestly made all the stress and setbacks worth it.”
We are proud to be the only NDIS provider who stepped forward when others wouldn’t. And we’re even prouder to know that Alexis is finally somewhere he can breathe, grow, and feel truly at home. If you’d like to find your perfect SIL home, reach out today!
