Mental Illnesses span a wide array of conditions, some of which can be quite serious and cause significant dysfunction, while others may present with negligible symptoms. The term Mental Illness includes more commonly known conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or phobias, as well as lesser known conditions such as schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, dissociative identity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette’s Syndrome, or PTSD.
All forms of Mental Illness present with distinct symptoms, though there may be significant overlap between conditions which can skew the lines between one condition or another. Regardless of the specific illness, mental illnesses are known to cause many challenges in the lives of people affected by them. Some challenges are visible to observers, while others are faced by patients in their minds without obvious outward evidence.
In many ways, Mental Illness is poorly understood, even by doctors and scientists. Some are provoked by experiences or trauma, while others can be the result of another unrelated illness. Some Mental Illnesses have a genetic linkage wherein patients whose relatives experienced Mental Illness are more likely to be diagnosed with a Mental Illness. There are also Mental Illnesses without a specific known cause.
Besides the causes of Mental Illness, there may be biochemical features of them that present opportunities for treatment. Even without knowing how specific chemicals in the brain affect the presentation of Mental Illnesses, modern science and clinical medicine have identified specific biochemical targets to improve the lived experience and function of patients.
If you suffer from a long-term disability resulting from a mental health condition, also known as a psychosocial disability or PSD, it is covered under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and you may be eligible for funding to avail of our support services.
It is estimated that 3 million people in Australia experience mild to moderate mental health issues and around 700,000 people have severe and persistent mental illnesses that demonstrate complex needs and thus require support due to their disability.
At Maple, we can walk you through the assessment process to see if you qualify for NDIS Mental Illness benefits. If you or your loved one meets the criteria, we can facilitate the process and have the full capacity to provide any support services you need.
To become an NDIS participant, you need to provide evidence of your mental health condition but a specific diagnosis is not required. NDIS support is contingent on how the condition impacts you and your daily activities, rather than the diagnosis itself, and that’s where our Mental Illness Specialists can help you.
The NDIS seeks to provide better access to high quality, personalised, and innovative supports and services to enhance the independence and social and economic participation of people with disabilities and their carers.
When addressing psychosocial disability within the NDIS it is essential to understand that “recovery” doesn’t necessarily imply a complete “cure.” Rather, it refers to the journey towards attaining an optimal state of personal, social, and emotional well-being.
The NDIS funds several critical services for people with Mental Illnesses. These include personal care support, community access support, nutritional support, skill development, transport, household tasks and behavioural support. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available are determined partly by the severity of a patient’s disability.
NDIS funding for mental illness is primarily intended to support your daily living needs. It doesn’t cover clinical requirements, therapies, or treatment programs; however, it can provide assistance in terms of transportation to and from appointments and offer support during your clinical sessions.
To be eligible for NDIS funding, participants must meet the age, residency and disability criteria. In addition to this, participants must compile evidence that demonstrates their mental health illness in terms of disability. Your health team can help you with this.
By partnering with Maple Community Services as NDIS mental health service providers, together, we can help you identify your priorities and come up with a support plan that provides the specific services you need, enabling you to lead a fulfilling life.
A psychosocial disability occurs when a mental health condition creates ongoing challenges that affect a person’s ability to participate fully in daily life. This may include difficulties with communication, social interaction, self-management, decision-making, maintaining routines, or engaging in work, study, and community activities.
Depending on a participant’s goals and circumstances, NDIS mental health funding may be used for supports such as daily living assistance, community participation, capacity building, Supported Independent Living (SIL), support coordination, transport, and other services that help improve independence and quality of life.
Recovery looks different for everyone. For many people, recovery is not about eliminating symptoms entirely but about building skills, maintaining stability, achieving personal goals, strengthening relationships, and living a meaningful life with the right supports in place.
Treatment of Mental Illnesses most often includes a combination of medications and therapies aimed at enabling patients to manage their symptoms and function optimally from day to day.
A person with an emotional or mental disorder may not know they are living with an illness. Usually, they can be evaluated by a General Practitioner, Psychiatrist, or Psychologist and have their symptoms assessed. If warranted, a diagnosis can be made, and treatment initiated under the respective diagnosing professional, or treatment can be referred to another provider. A Mental Illness Support Worker can assist you and your loved ones during this treatment.
