Introduction to Palliative Care

Any patient that is diagnosed with an illness with lasting effects can benefit from Palliative Care. Palliative care is a medical field that helps patients deal with the ongoing symptoms and any consequences of their illness or injury. This can involve a combination of counselling, medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pain management, or other support services as needed.

Whatever the inciting illness or injury, Palliative Care Services can improve a patient’s quality of life by helping them manage any ongoing deficits.

Palliative Care Information

By incorporating an interdisciplinary approach, Palliative Care evaluates a patient’s ongoing needs in multiple functional areas, as well as the continuing impact of their chronic illness. For many Palliative Care patients, ongoing pain can cause significant issues in their ability to function from day to day.

Other Palliative Care patients may require functional support from occupational therapists or physical therapists to deal with disabilities from injuries or debilitating diseases.

What Does Our Palliative Care Involve?

We have four major categories of Palliative Care Support Services. Each type of support service contributes to your overall well-being and expands personal options to live a life that is most fulfilling.

Types of Palliative Care Support Services

Our team works one on one with you to help you with day-to-day activities, connect you with high quality treatment and therapy services. Our support includes a full range of different services for you to determine which will best suit you.

Options include any or all of the following:

Is Palliative Care Covered by the NDIS?

If you suffer from a disability requiring Palliative Care some NDIS supports may be available in conjunction with any access to mainstream health systems.

According to the NDIS, “Where a NDIS participant has a Palliative Care plan in place and is not hospitalised, the NDIS will fund supports required as a direct result of the disability where the support assists the participant to undertake activities of daily living. These supports may be provided at the same time as Palliative Care supports. The NDIS is, however, not responsible for Palliative Care. Palliative Care is provided by the health system.”

At Maple Community Services, we can walk you through the assessment process to see if you qualify for NDIS Palliative Care benefits. If you or your loved one meets the criteria, we can help facilitate the process and have the full capacity to provide any support services you need.

To become an NDIS participant, you need to provide evidence of your condition, but a specific diagnosis is not required. NDIS support is contingent on how the condition impacts you and your daily activities, rather than the diagnosis itself, and that’s where our Palliative Care Specialists can help you.

What Can NDIS Fund For Palliative Care?

The NDIS aims to provide access to high quality, personalised, and innovative supports and services to enhance the independence, and social and economic participation of people with disabilities and their carers.

The NDIS funds several critical services for people who require Palliative Care. These include personal care support, community access support, nutritional support, skill development, transport, household tasks, and behavioural support. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available are partly determined by the severity of a person’s illness.

By partnering with Maple Community Services, together, we can help you identify your priorities and cater a support plan that provides the specific services you need, enabling you to lead a fulfilling life.

What Does It Mean to Be Put on Palliative Care?

A lot of people associate Palliative Care with end-of-life care, but this isn’t always the case. Palliative Care is for the type of specialised care provided for people living with a serious illness or disability. This can include life threatening or terminal illnesses but it can also be chronic illnesses that cause prolonged symptoms. Sometimes they are cured and no longer need Palliative Care.
