Introduction to Huntington's Disease Care

Huntington's Disease is a rare genetic disorder that causes neurocognitive symptoms in varying degrees, but which progress over the course of the illness. It affects the central nervous system which includes the brain and the spinal cord.

If you or your loved one has Huntington's Disease, this can have a huge impact on many aspects of your life. With the right support and treatment, patients with Huntington’s Disease can live longer, happier lives and still participate in most daily activities before the disease progresses.

Huntington’s Disease Information

Symptoms of Genetic Condition include patients experiencing changes in their ability to think about and perform tasks and control their emotions, as well as difficulties with physical activity and uncontrolled movements. Patients living with Huntington’s Disease can experience complications of the illness including pneumonia, difficulty eating and swallowing, urinary tract infections, and bowel incontinence, but it nearly always progresses to dementia, and eventually death.

Huntington’s Disease is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, which means that if someone has one parent affected by the illness, there is a 50% chance that they will inherit the same aberrant genes and eventually develop symptoms. Progressive generations of patients with the disease experience symptoms at a younger age. There is no cure for Huntington’s Disease, but there are medications and therapies which can improve the quality of life and functional abilities of patients living with it.

Huntington’s Disease is usually diagnosed in patients who have a family member who had the illness. The diagnosis can be made via a combination of genetic testing and brain imaging. Most people with Huntington’s Disease begin to experience symptoms when they are middle aged. Treatment is usually started when patients begin to show symptoms and is aimed at reducing the impact of those symptoms on their function and well-being.

Is Huntington's Disease Care Covered by the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is available throughout Australia to anyone under the age of 65 who can demonstrate that they have a permanent intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychosocial disability. The overall aim of the NDIS is to improve a person’s ability to function in all aspects of daily living and, if possible, gain more independence.

If you or your loved one has one or more of these disabilities as a result of Huntington’s Disease and needs professional support to manage their illness, you may be eligible for support under this scheme.

At Maple Community Services, we can walk you through the assessment process to see if you qualify for NDIS Huntington’s Disease support benefits. If you or your loved one meets the criteria, we will facilitate the process and have the full capacity to provide the comprehensive support services you need.

What Can NDIS Fund For Huntington's Disease Care?

The NDIS funds several critical services for people who have disabilities resulting from Huntington’s Disease. These include personal care support, community access support, nutritional support, skills development, transport, household tasks, and behavioural support. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available vary by the severity of the disability or dysfunction.

By partnering with Maple Community Services, together, we can help you identify your priorities and cater a support plan that provides the specific services you need, enabling you to lead a fulfilling life.
