Finding The Right NDIS Accommodation

Find the right NDIS-funded accommodation to suit your lifestyle, needs, and goal. Whether it’s supported living, short-term stays, or specialised housing, Maple can find the disability housing solution for you.

What is NDIS Housing?

NDIS housing options include Supported Independent Living (SIL), Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), and Short-Term Accommodation (STA). NDIS accomodation is tailored to meet a range of support needs.

Supported Independent Living enables individuals to live independently while receiving tailored support services. These disability accommodation options are designed to promote independence, dignity, and community inclusion for NDIS participants.

The NDIS provides funding to support independent living through both SIL funding and SDA funding. NDIS funding helps participants access homes that suit their functional requirements and personal goals.

How Can Accommodation Help Someone With A Disability?

People living with disabilities often face extraordinary challenges with day-to-day tasks and activities. Yet, these challenges are never one and the same. Where some people may require assistance with everyday hygiene tasks such as showering and getting in and out of bed, others may require help with building life skills such  cooking, cleaning, and laundry

There are innumerable possibilities for the amount of support someone may need and each participant’s plan will be completely different. That’s where NDIS Housing providers, Maple Community Services come in. We can help you assess the best type of living arrangements to suit your needs and work on building life skills to help you live as independently as possible.

Supported Independent Living and Specialist Disability Accommodation participants must have an approved NDIS plan with funding allocated to disability housing. This plan outlines the individual’s support needs, goals, and the funding available for housing and daily living.

Maple can help you advocate for disability housing in your NDIS plan, explore your NDIS housing options and develop a plan that suits your lifestyle and goals. Housing options may include SDA homes, SIL arrangements, and temporary housing solutions depending on the participant’s eligibility and preferences.

What Are The Types of NDIS Housing Options?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) accommodation offers 24/7 support for individuals with high support needs. This includes shared homes, sole occupancy, and hosted accommodation arrangements. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), on the other hand, is specifically designed for individuals with very high support needs. This level of support can incorporate structural features and assistive technology to support daily living.

In addition, Short-Term Accommodation (STA) provides temporary housing solutions, helping individuals access support during periods of transition or respite. Other options include Medium-Term Accommodation and Individualised Living Options (ILO), each offering flexible and person-centred approaches to independent living.

Does NDIS Pay for Accommodation?

NDIS funding for Accommodation for people living with disabilities is only available to those with high-level functional impairments or high support, complex care needs.

You will need to determine if you or your loved one qualify for the SDA or SIL funding options through the NDIA’s assessment and planning process.

SIL funding covers the support services and assistance provided to participants, not the cost of the accommodation itself. Only assistive devices or aids can be supported through NDIS funding.

Expenses such as rent, groceries, utilities, telephones, and internet access are not included in the NDIS budget. General household items such as furniture, appliances, and cooking utensils are the responsibility of the participant. They may be supported through other government or non-government programs.

How Can I Access NDIS Accommodation?

The NDIS relies on evidence and advice from Allied Health Professionals to determine if a participant is eligible for Accommodation funding. The areas that health professionals must address are the following:

  • The significant impact of the participant’s disability on their mobility, self care and cognition.
  • The type of housing that would be appropriate for the participant
  • The other types of supports required for the participant to achieve their housing goals

During your planning meeting, you need to demonstrate to your planner why Accommodation is reasonable and necessary to your individual situation. Feel free to reach out to our support team at Maple for any advice and questions you may have surrounding the process.

Do I Qualify For NDIS Accommodation?

There are many factors that the NDIS considers before deciding on your available funding. The support service needs to be reasonable and necessary to help you achieve your goals, purpose, and aspirations.

The NDIS will fund SIL assistance for participants who have high support needs and require a significant amount of help throughout the day. You will be eligible if it is deemed the most appropriate support that we can provide for you. Accommodation funding is considered through the SDA when there is high-level functional impairments or high support needs.

The amount that the NDIS funds for you will depend on the amount of support you need to live as independently as possible.

Arrange a planning meeting with us and we can discuss what supports you may need in and around the home and help you determine whether these are support you would benefit from.
