More Than a Home: How SIL with Maple Changed Jackson’s Life
Everyone deserves the opportunity to feel in control and fulfilled in their life. At Maple Community Services, this belief is at the heart of everything we do. For people living with complex needs, the right environment can change everything. It can open doors to independence, connection, and growth.
Jackson is no exception. He came from a place of distress and uncertainty, and in his new SIL accomodation he was able to find a home and a way forward. Through personalised care, patience, and the unwavering support of his Maple team, Jackson has discovered what life is like when support is tailored, respectful, and grounded in understanding.
This is his story. And it’s one that reminds us all what’s possible when care is done with heart.
Jackson’s First Experience With NDIS Housing
When Jackson first entered the NDIS system, life felt off balance. Living in a shared Supported Independent Living (SIL) home near Newcastle, Jackson regularly showed behaviours of concern. He had frequent physical outbursts and sometimes the situations escalated to him hitting his support workers. These behaviours weren’t just challenging, they were signs of deep discomfort and unmet needs. The shared environment of his disability housing triggered distress, and Jackson, who is non-verbal and autistic, had no way to express what he was truly feeling.
He couldn’t live with family and other providers were hesitant to help, even though his circumstances required urgent change. When we met Jackson it was obvious a roof was put over his head, but no time or care was put towards finding the right environment where he could feel safe, understood, and supported. We immediately stepped into help, because at Maple we never leave anyone behind.
A New Chapter With SIL Begins
Working closely with Jackson’s Support Coordinator, the team here at Maple, quickly identified an opportunity. We had an opening in our highly sought after Penrith Apartments in Western Sydney that was the perfect fit for Jackson. He toured a private unit featuring his own laundry, kitchen, living space, bathroom and bedroom and discovered This SIL home offered exactly what he needed. A chance to be in his own quiet space, with the option to share support staff under a group ratio. Which allows his limited NDIS funding to stretch further without compromising care.
Before any final decisions were made, Maple arranged for Jackson to trial the apartment through a Short Term Accommodation (STA) stay. This ensured the new environment truly felt comfortable and right to Jackson.

Holistic Support, Every Step of the Way
It didn’t stop at finding a home. When Jackson arrived in Sydney, he was out of routine, without established therapies or medical supports. We prioritised helping him connect with a new GP and coordinated referrals to a Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist (OT), and Behaviour Support Practitioner (BSP). Together with his new team, Jackson began to thrive.
Maple introduced him to regular support workers who took the time to understand his communication style. His new Speech Therapist implemented a personalised communication system. And, for the first time, Jackson began using it to express his needs and preferences. He finally had a voice.
Building Life Skills and Confidence Through SIL
Jackon’s transformation has been nothing short of remarkable.
He now participates in building his daily living skills. He is learning to cook, clean, do laundry, and manage his space with growing independence. With the support of his team, he’s exploring his interests, going to the movies, swimming, visiting local zoos and farms, even exploring the Blue Mountains.
Perhaps most heartwarming of all, Jackson has made friends with another participant who lives in the same SIL home. They share a really special bond, eating meals together, going on community outings, and sharing uiet moments watching movies. For someone who once struggled with isolation, these connections are everything.
Maple’s Mission in Action
At Maple Community Services, we believe that care is more than a service, it’s an ongoing commitment to putting NDIS participants first. Jackson’s story is one of many that reflect our core mission: to meet people where they are, and walk alongside them as they build a life that’s truly their own.
Whether it’s coordinating a smooth transition, finding the right supported living environment, or building a team of qualified, compassionate professionals, we’re here to make sure no one is left behind.
Because everyone deserves a place to call home, and the right support to grow into their fullest potential.
