What you should know about Muscular Dystrophy:

Muscular Dystrophy is a group of genetic conditions that cause progressive muscle weakness and can affect mobility, coordination, and everyday independence. While there is no cure, therapies, assistive technology, and personalised support can help people maintain their quality of life.

There are several different categories of Muscular Dystrophy, with more than 30 sub-types with varying severity and symptoms:

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)

The most common type in children, causing progressive muscle weakness from an early age.

Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD)

Similar to Duchenne but typically progresses more slowly.

Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD)

Present from birth or early childhood, with varying levels of severity.

Myotonic Dystrophy

Often develops in adulthood and affects muscle relaxation as well as muscle strength.

Facioscapulo-humeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD)

Primarily affects the face, shoulders, and upper arms.

Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD)

Typically develops later in life and affects the muscles used for swallowing and eyelid movement.

Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy (OPMD)

Typically develops later in life and affects the muscles used for swallowing and eyelid movement.

Distal Muscular Dystrophy

Mainly affects the muscles of the hands, forearms, feet, and lower legs.

Personal Care

Muscular Dystrophy can make everyday tasks such as personal care, dressing, meal preparation, mobility, and medication routines more challenging over time. Our Support Workers provide personalised assistance that helps participants maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life.

Household Tasks

As muscle weakness progresses, managing household responsibilities can become more physically demanding. We can assist with cleaning, laundry, shopping, meal preparation, and other household tasks to help maintain a safe, comfortable, and well-organised home.

Travel and
Transport

Getting to medical appointments, therapies, education, employment, and community activities may require additional support. We provide safe and reliable transport that helps participants stay connected to their healthcare, goals, and community.

Community Participation

Remaining active and connected to the community is important for wellbeing and independence. We support participants to engage in social, recreational, educational, and community activities that align with their interests, abilities, and personal goals.

Development of
Life Skills

Muscular Dystrophy can affect a person’s ability to complete everyday tasks independently. Our team provides practical support to help participants develop life skills, maintain daily routines, build confidence, and maximise their independence wherever possible.

Muscular Dystrophy is a group of diseases that damage and weaken your muscles over time. It is an inherited disease that affects your DNA. Abnormal or mutated genes interfere with the production of the muscle proteins that are necessary for the normal function of your muscles. When these proteins are defective, people are considered to have some form of Muscular Dystrophy.

Different types of Muscular Dystrophy affect the patient’s prognosis. Many people with the disease can lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, or look after themselves and will eventually require assistive devices and other supportive measures. There is currently no cure for Muscular Dystrophy, but certain treatments and supports can help someone with the disease to live a more comfortable, fulfilling, and independent life.

Many therapies and medications can help those who live with Muscular Dystrophy to manage their illness and live full lives. Thankfully, Maple is very well-equipped to provide ample support services to those living with Muscular Dystrophy.

Yes! If you or your loved one suffers from a type of Muscular Dystrophy, it is covered under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and you may be eligible for funding to avail of our support services.

The type of Muscular Dystrophy and the severity of your symptoms determine your eligibility. For the NDIS, different forms of Muscular Dystrophy and severity are listed under categories B, C and D. At Maple, we can assist you in the assessment process to see if you or your loved one qualifies for NDIS Muscular Dystrophy benefits. If you or your loved one meets the criteria, we have the capacity to provide comprehensive services to enhance your quality of life.

The NDIS funds several critical services for people with Muscular Dystrophy. These include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, personal care support, community participation, nutritional support and customized home services. NDIS funding can even pay for a Support Worker to assist you or your loved one at home. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available are determined primarily by the level of disability.

For children younger than seven years of age, NDIS funding provides early interventions, takes a family-centred approach, and helps families connect with Muscular Dystrophy service providers. At Maple, we can assist you or your loved one with the NDIS application to receive your or your loved one’s needed funding.

NDIS provides access to independent assessments for children and adults to determine their level of functioning. Rather than focusing on the specific diagnosis, these Muscular Dystrophy assessments are designed to determine the functional deficits of your or your loved one’s disability and level of impairment requiring support in everyday life. Find out more by connecting with our Muscular Dystrophy Support Workers.

Yes. While Muscular Dystrophy presents different challenges for everyone, many people continue to pursue education, employment, sport, advocacy, and other personal goals. There are also well-known athletes, public figures, and  celebrities living with Muscular Dystrophy who have raised awareness of the condition and shown that, with the right support and opportunities, people can achieve meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Many people living with Muscular Dystrophy can live independently with the right combination of therapies, assistive technology, accessible housing, and personalised support. The level of independence varies depending on the type of Muscular Dystrophy and the individual’s needs, but early intervention and ongoing support can help people maintain their independence and quality of life for as long as possible.
