How Maple Provided Same-Day Supported Independent Living for Cassius
Moving homes is a daunting experience for anybody. Can you imagine being discharged from hospital and having nowhere to go? That was the reality for Cassius, one of our incredible NDIS participants. After a distressing experience with a previous Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider, Cassius found himself without a place to live. With complex support needs and no time to wait, he needed an urgent SIL placement. Not in days or weeks, but on the very day of his hospital discharge.
Cassius’ SIL Journey of Hope and Recovery
This case came through our marketing channels and quickly reached the intake team at Maple Community Services. As specialists in Supported Independent Living for NDIS participants, we sprung into immediate action!
Our first step was to request all documentation from Cassisus’ support team so we could get a full understanding of his needs, current situation and what type of environment would give him the best advantage to thrive. Within hours, we had curated multiple disability housing options that complimented his support needs and personal preferences. We presented these options to Cassius to review, and he selected a home that felt right to him. By the end of the day, Cassius was moving into one of our beautiful Maple homes — an accessible, comfortable space with a private room where he could breathe, settle, and begin again.
Complex Support in Supported Independent Living
New beginnings aren’t always smooth. For Cassius, transitioning to his new SIL accommodation meant adjusting to a completely new environment, unfamiliar routines, and different faces. On just his second day living in our disability housing, Cassius tested positive for COVID-19 and in the days that followed, he experienced daily behavioural escalations. Facing behavioural challenges, feeling unwell and emotionally unsettled it would’ve been understandable for things to fall apart. Instead, our team came together and put a structure in place that would work for Cassius. As a Supported Independent Living participant with complex care needs, he was already receiving 24/7 supports, but we thought it would be best to increase his supports and collaborate closely with his Behaviour Support Practitioner, holding daily check-ins, reviewing strategies, and adjusting our approach in real-time to make sure Cassius wasn’t just managed — he was supported. We wanted to make sure that every moment of hardship was met with patience, understanding, and expertise.
The Power of Community in SIL
If there’s one thing we’re passionate about, it’s community — and not just because it’s in our name. At Maple Community Services we believe belonging to an inclusive community increases our wellbeing, makes us feel more connected and supported and really lifts our spirits. We gently encouraged Cassisus into community engagement, building meaningful activities into his daily life — not just to fill time, but to restore his sense of self. We started with things at first: shared meals, gentle outdoor walks, music, connection. And with each small win, Cassius started to rebuild confidence and became comfortable with community participation. Today, Cassius is not just stable — he is growing, thriving, and enjoys spending time with his housemates, pursuing new hobbies and exploring his neighbourhood.
SIL Placement Done Right
Cassius’ journey perfectly captures the beauty of Supported Independent Living in the NDIS when it’s done right — person-centred, fast, and infused with genuine care. It’s about transforming a participant who has lost all sense of hope, by restoring joy, confidence and trust so that they experience a newfound independence and spark for life. For the team at Maple Community Services no SIL case is too complex and no participant is ever left behind.
