Finding Her Way Home: Katie’s SIL Journey with Maple

When Katie first connected with Maple Community Services, her future was uncertain. She had spent many years living alone in public housing, until life took a difficult turn, and she found herself incarcerated. By 2024, Katie had served her time and was ready to begin again. Her release was dependent on securing appropriate SIL accommodation. She was refused parole solely due to the lack of appropriate housing and support in the community. This is Katie’s SIL journey, and we are so proud to share it!
Rapid Response to Urgent SIL Needs
That’s when Maple stepped in. A mutual connection—someone who had previously referred a participant to Maple—remembered the care, dignity, and respect their loved one received. Wanting the same trusted support for Katie, they referred her to our team. They were hopeful that she, too, would find safety and understanding in our care.
Despite only being notified on the morning of her parole hearing, and with no guarantee that she would be released that day, our team rallied behind the scenes. A care roster was drafted in record time, housing options prepped, and every possible measure taken to be ready, just in case. And when the green light came, we were ready.
Creating the Right SIL Environment
Katie was immediately moved into one of Maple’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes. A private, self-contained unit with a resident that shares her Indigenous heritage on site. The setup was a perfect match. From intake through to service delivery, our management team made sure everything was ready the moment Katie arrived. When the time came, the entire team was there to welcome her in person and support her through the crucial first steps of settling into her new home.
To ease the transition, Maple furnished Katie’s space with brand-new furniture and equipment. We made sure to include a TV, and a new phone, ensuring her first steps into freedom felt supported and respectful. We connected her with local Indigenous health services and coordinated appointments to help meet parole requirements and rebuild her community ties.
Flexible Support for Complex Needs
To meet the extensive conditions of Katie’s parole, Maple implemented a highly flexible support roster. We made sure our staff could start at short notice to accompany her to appointments and check-ins when needed.
Today, Katie receives 24/7 support, flexible care options tailored to her complex parole conditions. And, most importantly, a home that offers her comfort and safety.
We are so proud that Katie is thriving. Her SIL home offers stability, structure, and space to breathe. She’s attending appointments, exploring the community again, and building a new chapter with confidence.
The Department of Corrections called it “a complex case.” We call it a privilege.
