How Maple Helped Harry Find a Home That Feels Like His Own

At Maple, we understand that Supported Independent Living (SIL) is more than just a roof over someone’s head — it’s about finding a space where individuals feel secure, supported, and truly at home. For one of our participants, Harry, the journey to finding the right SIL home came during a time of uncertainty and we were so proud to be part of the solution that brought stability, trust, and empowerment into his life.

A New Chapter Begins In His SIL Home

When we first connected with Harry, he had been through a lot. He had experienced ongoing compatibility challenges with previous housemates, which left him feeling anxious and isolated. Past experiences had affected his confidence and led to a deep mistrust of law enforcement. Now, he was being discharged from hospital with nowhere to go. That’s where Maple stepped in.

From the very beginning, our focus was on Harry — his story, his goals, his comfort. We took the time to understand every part of his journey, including what had worked, what hadn’t, and where he hoped to go next. While he was used to spending much of his time alone and had a strong mistrust towards authority, it was clear to us that he would thrive in a setting where he could feel both independent and supported.

We acted swiftly, allocating our full resources to identify a home that ticked every box — from accessibility and safety, to space, comfort, and the ability to receive interactive support. But we didn’t stop at finding a home. We created a personalised transition plan with a single purpose in mind: to help Harry feel safe, respected, and understood.

Making a House a Home

Once we found the perfect home to suit Harry’s needs, we arranged a property viewing so he could see the space, ask any questions, and ensure he felt in control of the process.
To help him feel settled, we carefully moved his belongings into the new home and set up the space to reflect his personality and preferences — turning an unfamiliar place into somewhere familiar and comforting.

In the first few nights, Harry had trouble sleeping — a common experience during big transitions. Our team responded with empathy and care, providing sleepover support in his unit to help him feel safe and supported. We also introduced a visual planner for daily routines, offering structure and predictability that made a big difference in his day-to-day wellbeing.

Growth, Stability, and a Little Bit of Magic

Since moving into his new home, Harry has blossomed. His previous incident record has significantly reduced, and he now works closely with his Behavioural Support team on a weekly basis. The space he now calls home not only meets his practical needs — it also brings him peace and stability.

One of the most touching additions? A beautiful initiative we call Harry’s Home Barber Shop — created just for him to support his passion and provide comfort around an activity that was once a source of anxiety. It’s just one example of how we listen, respond, and tailor support to each individual’s world.

His mother recently shared these kind words:

“Thank you for your email and the generous time you have taken for Harry’s CP supports. Your thought and care are greatly appreciated, and his schedule looks great… Harry is in good hands.”
