AFL With Maple | Score Assist To Be Introduced in NAB AFLW
The AFL has announced the introduction of the ‘Score Assist’ smart ball technology into the 2024 NAB AFLW season. This technology, developed in collaboration with Sportable, Intaneous, and Sherrin, is designed to provide real-time alerts to Score Assist Officials (SAOs) whenever the ball crosses the goal line, hits the post, or is touched in flight. The SAOs will use this technology, along with broadcast vision if needed, to assist umpires in making accurate decisions, adding a new level of precision to the game.
The smart ball technology has undergone extensive testing over the past 18 months, including trials at NAB AFLW match venues and blind testing with players. The sensors embedded in the ball track its position, speed, spin rates, and flight time, ensuring it performs like a standard match ball while providing critical data for officiating. This technology represents a significant advancement in the AFL’s strategic focus on innovation and will enhance the accuracy of goal decisions in the NAB AFLW.
Key figures involved in the project, including AFL EGM of Football Laura Kane, Sportable EVP Greg Basser, and Sherrin Managing Director Chris Lambert, have expressed their excitement about this development. They highlight the collaboration and testing efforts that have gone into perfecting the smart ball, which combines tradition with cutting-edge technology to elevate the game. The smart ball’s introduction is expected to make a significant impact on the 2024 NAB AFLW season, ensuring fairer and more accurate officiating.
