Whether you or your loved one experiences a disability, there are ample support services available with funding from the National Disability Insurance Scheme to ensure you live your life to the fullest. Let’s take a look at exactly what this means and how you can make the most of your opportunities.

As registered NDIS transport providers in Sydney, Maple Community Services offer a multitude of benefits for people living with disabilities and their caregivers. First and foremost it ensures safe and reliable transportation, eliminating the stress and uncertainty associated with public or private transportation services. NDIS transport providers such as Maple, are well equipped to cater to various mobility needs. Whether it’s wheelchair accessibility, specialised vehicles, or trained staff who understand the specific requirements of their passengers.

Additionally, disability transport services are a vital lifeline for those living in remote or underserved areas, connecting you to necessary resources and community engagement opportunities. Beyond practicality, this service promotes social inclusion and a sense of belonging, as participants can engage in various activities, visit friends and family, and be active members of their local community. When we alleviate transportation barriers, we can enhance the overall well-being and quality of life for people with disabilities, as well as empower them to lead more independent and fulfilling lives.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funds reasonable and necessary support for people living with disabilities and each participant’s NDIS Plan is different. If your mobility is limited due to living with a disability, and you’re unable to drive or take public transport, NDIS can provide you with a general transport allowance to avail of Maple’s Transport and Travel Services.

If you are living with a disability, mobility may be one of your many core struggles. Transport is necessary to live an ordinary life, but personal circumstances may hinder your or a loved ones ability to drive a car or ride public transport. You may also find that accessing other transportation options such as taxis are limited for you. This can lead to significant limitations when it comes to getting around, going to appointments, getting to and from work or school, travelling, shopping, or visiting friends and family.

One of the biggest challenges people with disabilities face is the lack of independence due to personal circumstances. With the help of Transport and Travel Services, this can open up a whole new level of independence, having the ability to fully participate in your community, social circles, and personal tasks.

Depending on the participant’s plan, transport funding or supports may help with disability-related travel needs, including accessing work, education, appointments, community activities, and other approved supports. More specifically, the funding can be used for public transport training, driving lessons, support worker travel assistance, and vehicle modifications under assistive technology.

Funding for disability transport services under the NDIS can pay for a community bus, a taxi, or another kind of transport for those who are unable to get around themselves. However, it may not be used to pay a family member to drive you around. NDIS transport services funding can also go towards activities to help you build confidence through transport options. For example, if you have challenges you would like to overcome that make independent travel difficult, the NDIS may fund public transport training or driving lessons. The NDIS can also fund travel with a care worker who may accompany you to any community involvement, social connections or daily life activities. This type of funding usually falls under Assistance with Social and Community Participation. Modifications to a private vehicle you use for transport that makes it easier to access or operate can also be funded by NDIS under Assistive Technology.

You should consider reliability, availability, the level of assistance provided, service area, and whether the provider can accommodate your individual support needs. It’s also worth asking how transport costs and Support Worker time will be charged.

Depending on your NDIS plan and support needs, a Support Worker may assist you during travel and provide support while attending appointments, activities, or other destinations.

Transport funding may be used differently depending on how a participant’s plan is structured and managed. Participants should check their approved transport funding and plan arrangements before using it for taxis, rideshare services, or other transport expenses.

There are many factors that the NDIS considers before deciding on your available funding. The support service needs to be reasonable and necessary to help you achieve your goals, purpose, and aspirations. NDIS Transport and Travel Services are covered under the Core Supports – arranging and providing transport-, but it can also fall under any of the other Core Supports if you have a need for it within those categories. The specifics of your NDIS Plan will determine how you can use the available funds, whether they’re considered Core Supports, Capacity Building, or Capital Funding. If you’re not sure if your needs fall under this category, we can help you clarify with the NDIA exactly what is and isn’t covered under your personalised plan.
