Creating More Inclusive Sport: The Maple AFL Wheelchair Initiative

Sport has the power to bring people together, build confidence, and foster a sense of belonging. However, for many people living with disability, accessing specialised sporting equipment remains a significant barrier to getting involved.

At Maple Community Services, we know that the desire to participate is rarely the challenge. More often, the obstacles are practical. To help address this, we are taking active steps to remove barriers and create fair, inclusive opportunities for Australians of all abilities.

Expanding Inclusive Sport Across Australia

To help tackle equipment barriers head-on, Maple Community Services is proud to partner with the AFL to launch the Maple Wheelchair Initiative.

Through this initiative, 75 sports wheelchairs will be donated to communities across Australia. This provides greater opportunities for people living with disability to participate in sports, build lasting friendships, and experience the camaraderie of being part of a team.

This project builds on Maple’s ongoing partnership with the AFL and our shared commitment to creating vibrant, inclusive sporting communities nationwide.

Turning Motivation Into Real Opportunities

Through our daily work with participants, one thing remains consistently clear: people living with disability have the drive and passion to get involved. However, a lack of specialised equipment, transport, and practical support often keeps them on the sidelines.

The Maple Wheelchair Initiative was developed directly in response to those everyday challenges.

By increasing access to sports wheelchairs in local areas, we are removing physical barriers so participants can experience the confidence, community connection, and health benefits that sport provides.

How Your NDIS Plan Can Support Your Sporting Ambitions

Inclusion is about more than access to essential services. It is about access to real-life opportunities. This initiative complements Maple’s broader community access programs, empowering participants to engage in the activities they love.
