Short-Term Accommodation or SIL Trial: What’s the Best Way to Start?
Deciding to move into Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a big step. For anyone moving homes is a significant milestone that requires an important decision and time to adjust. For many NDIS participants, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in life. It can bring a greater sense of freedom, safety, and stability. And, while there are so many positives it can also be a daunting experience.
Taking That First Step Toward Independence
That’s why trial options exist. Whether you’re exploring your first move out of home. Transitioning from another support setting. Or, unsure about the level of support you’ll need, Short-Term Accommodation (STA) and SIL trials can help you ease into the process. These options are designed to build your confidence, give you a taste of supported living, and make sure the setup feels right. Before making a long-term commitment.
Both options can be part of the journey to greater independence, but they serve slightly different purposes. In this blog, we’ll break down the differences, benefits, and how to decide what’s right for you.
What Is Short-Term Accommodation (STA)?
Short-Term Accommodation, including respite, is an NDIS-funded support that allows participants to stay in a supported home or care setting for a short period. This usually lasts up to 14 days at a time.
It’s ideal for:
- Trying out independent living in a safe, supported environment
- Taking a break from your usual routine or informal supports
- Practicing life skills like cooking, routines, or managing care with support workers
- Testing different living arrangements before applying for SIL
Key facts about STA:
Short-Term Accommodation is funded under Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Living). STA in Australia typically includes accommodation, food, activities, and the support staff you need during your stay. It’s designed to be flexible: whether you’re looking for a weekend break, an overnight stay, or a week-long trial. You can use STA in group settings or more individualised supported living environments, depending on what suits you best. For many NDIS participants, it’s the first real experience of living away from family or another support setup. NDIS STA offers a low-pressure, supported space to test out what independent living might feel like before taking the next step into SIL.
For many Australian NDIS participants, STA is the first opportunity to experience what it’s like to live away from family or a previous support setup. It offers a supported, low-pressure environment to test how SIL might work for you.
What Is a SIL Trial?
A SIL Trial is more structured than STA. It’s a planned trial of Supported Independent Living, where you live in a SIL home for a short period. This is typically 2–12 weeks and has the full supports in place. So you can experience exactly what it would be like if you moved in permanently.
Unlike general respite, a SIL trial is about testing the actual fit of the home, support team, daily routines, and housemates, if applicable. It helps you and your support team determine:
- What level of support is needed
- Whether the home and setup suits your needs
- If any adjustments are needed before moving in long-term
- Whether SIL is the right goal for your NDIS plan
Key SIL Trial Facts
SIL trials may be funded in a few different ways. Some providers can offer SIL trials using your Core Supports budget. While others may assist you in accessing transition funding or using flexible arrangements within your existing plan. If Supported Independent Living is already listed as a goal in your NDIS plan, a trial stay might also be funded as part of a pre-SIL assessment. This will help to determine whether it’s the right long-term option for you.
Supported Independent Living trials are particularly helpful if you’re looking to include SIL in your next plan review or seeking evidence for a change of circumstances request. It shows the NDIA that you’re exploring the right fit and gives valuable evidence to support funding requests.
STA vs SIL Trial: What’s the Difference?
| Feature | Short-Term Accommodation (STA) | SIL Trial |
| Purpose | Respite, skills building, trying out care | Testing a real SIL setup |
| Funding | Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Living) | May vary – Core, goal-based, transition funds |
| Duration | Typically 1–14 days | 2–12 weeks |
| Support Level | Variable – may not match SIL support ratios | Mirrors full SIL support |
| Outcome | Helps build readiness and confidence | Helps determine if SIL is the right long-term fit |
You don’t have to choose one or the other. In fact, many SIL-funded participants start with STA, then move into a SIL trial when they feel more ready.
Why Not Go Straight into Supported Independent Living?
You can! But for some, taking the extra time can help to:
- Build Confidence – You’ll learn what it feels like to live more independently, with supports when needed.
- Find the Right Fit – Every SIL home is different. Trial and short term stays let you see what works best for your preferences and goals.
- Gather Evidence – If you’re applying for SIL funding, trials provide useful information and supporting documentation.
- Ease the Transition – Whether you’re moving out of family care or another setting, it helps reduce anxiety and build skills gradually.
