Sasha’s Journey into Supported Living with Maple

At Maple Community Services, we believe every person deserves a safe, stable, and empowering environment to thrive. For Sasha, stepping into adulthood came with challenges most of us can only imagine. But with the right support, the right people, and a home that truly felt like hers, her transition into adulthood and supported living felt a lot of safer and stable than her early years.Â
Sasha’s Life Before Supported Independent Living (SIL)
For Sasha, turning 18 wasn’t just a milestone, it was a turning point. After spending her youth navigating the complexities of residential care and frequent placement changes, adulthood brought new questions. Where would she live? Who would support her? And how could she build a life on her own terms?
Sasha’s history meant she needed more than just a roof over her head. She needed a home where she could feel safe, respected, and in control. A place where she could begin to trust, rebuild, and explore what independence meant for her.
Finding the Right SIL Fit
When Maple Community Services was introduced to Sasha’s case, it was clear that this transition would be more than just a change in housing. We want to empower Sasha to enter adulthood with a renewed sense of hope, happiness and stability. Moving into Supported Independent Living (SIL) marked her first experience in an adult home environment, and it needed to be right.Â
We worked closely with Sasha and her support coordinator to understand her unique needs and preferences. She needed a space that offered privacy, the chance to connect with others on her own terms, and support staff who respected her boundaries, while truly understanding her communication style. Just as importantly, she needed a routine that gave her a sense of structure and security. Together, we identified a home that offered all of this and more. Sasha chose a warm, welcoming property with individual units for three residents. This arrangement gave her the independence she deserved, with the comfort of knowing she could access support and connection whenever she felt ready.
Maple’s Person-Centred SIL Approach
What made this transition successful wasn’t just the physical environment. It was the approach. From day one, Sasha had a voice in the process. She helped establish her daily routines, decided how she would engage with her housemates and when she felt comfortable connecting with support staff. We honoured her preferences every step of the way. And built a support system around her, not the other way around. Staff took the time to learn Sasha’s boundaries, become familiar with her triggers and signs of discomfort. They discovered how to respond to Sasha so she always felt respected. We train all staff and make sure their sessions are also tailored to Sasha’s needs.Â

Supported Independent Living: Small Wins, Big Milestones
Since settling into her new home, Sasha has not only maintained stable accommodation, she’s truly begun to blossom. And we are so proud. Recently, she attended a psychiatrist appointment for the first time since childhood. This marked a powerful step forward in re-engaging with the clinical supports she had long avoided.
And perhaps just as meaningfully, she shared a meal with her co-residents for the first time. It might sound small, but for Sasha, it marked a turning point: a moment of trust, connection, and growth.
A Future Filled with Possibility Thanks To SIL
Today, Sasha continues to thrive in her SIL home. With Maple’s ongoing support, she is building a life that’s not defined by her past, but by her potential.
We remain committed to providing her with a home that feels safe, staff who truly understand her, and opportunities to connect. Entirely at her own pace and on her own terms.
Because at Maple, we don’t just provide services. We walk alongside people as they reclaim their independence, rediscover their strengths, and begin to write their own story.
