How To Get SIL Approval & Placement

Whether you’re just starting your NDIS journey or exploring new housing options, here’s a clear and simple breakdown of what to expect and how Maple can support you at every step.

1

Understand What SIL Is and Whether It’s Right for You

SIL includes help with:

  • Daily routines like getting ready in the morning, taking medication, or preparing meals
  • Personal care, mobility, and community access
  • Overnight or 24/7 support, depending on your needs

2

Explore Your Living Options

Once you understand how SIL works, the next step is exploring what’s available:

  • Browse SIL homes near you
  • Think about your ideal location, house size, accessibility needs, and housemate preferences
  • Consider the type of support you’d want: shared vs. 1:1, overnight care, mealtime support, etc.

3

Submit an Enquiry or Expression of Interest (EOI)

When you’ve found a home you’re interested in, or you’re just curious, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) or general enquiry. We’ll ask about:

  • Your NDIS plan and funding
  • Your support needs and daily routines
  • Your ideal lifestyle, cultural needs, or personal preferences
  • Your timing (e.g., emergency placement, short-term, or long-term move)

4

Review Your NDIS Plan and Funding

If you’re not sure what’s in your NDIS plan, or whether you even have SIL funding, we’ll help you:

  • Check your current plan to see if SIL is included
  • Understand what SIL does and doesn’t cover (vs SDA, ILO, or Core)
  • Talk through what evidence or goals may be needed for SIL eligibility
  • Support you to prepare for a plan review or reassessment if needed.

Even if you don’t have SIL funding yet, we can guide the steps to get there.

5

Get Matched to Suitable SIL Homes

We’ll present you with SIL homes that match your:

  • Support needs (staffing ratio, rostering, level of care)
  • Lifestyle preferences (shared interests, age/gender mix, quiet vs social homes)
  • Location needs (near family, transport, education, work, etc.)

From here, we begin compatibility and risk assessments to ensure a safe, comfortable, and sustainable home environment.

6

Book a Tour and Meet the Team

Next, you can visit the home(s) you’re interested in: either in-person or virtually. You’ll:

  • Tour the property, rooms, and common spaces
  • Meet the support workers and housemates
  • Ask questions about the day-to-day life, routines, rosters, and expectations
  • Decide whether the home feels right for you

If it’s not the perfect fit, we can explore alternative homes or options.

7

Finalise the Placement and Prepare to Move

If you’re happy to move forward:

  • We’ll finalise the SIL service agreement and onboarding paperwork
  • Help coordinate your NDIS Service Booking and supports
  • Assist with transitions from family, hospital, or temporary housing
  • Provide Short Term Accommodation (STA) if needed during the transition

We also offer furnished homes with utilities included, so you can move in with ease.

8

Move In and Begin Your Supports

Once you’re settled in, your SIL supports officially begin. This includes:

  • A detailed support plan built around your routines and goals
  • Ongoing goal tracking, skills-building, and reviews
  • A first-week check-in, a 30-day review, and continuous support from a consistent team
  • Long-term housing stability with flexibility if your needs change

You’re now in a home where your independence is supported, your choice is respected, and your progress is prioritised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose who I live with?

Yes. Housemate compatibility is a key part of the process. Maple offers participant matching to make sure you’re placed in a home with housemates who suit your lifestyle, interests, and support needs. You’ll also meet them before moving in.

Absolutely. We work closely with:

  • Families and carers
  • Support coordinators and LACs
  • Allied health professionals
  • Guardians or nominee decision-makers

Everyone involved in your care can help ensure your SIL home is the right fit.

No. You can submit an enquiry or Expression of Interest (EOI) even if you don’t have SIL funding yet. We can:

  • Review your current plan
  • Help you gather supporting evidence
  • Recommend next steps for requesting SIL in your next plan review
  • Furnished homes with all major utilities included
  • 24/7 tailored supports aligned to your NDIS goals
  • Trained, skilled and consistent support workers
  • Daily living supports, medication, personal care, meal prep, and more
  • Onboarding, welcome pack, and a 30-day review to check fit

Yes. Maple offers Short Term Accommodation (STA) and transitional SIL options. These are great if you’re:

  • Leaving hospital or another program
  • Trialling shared living
  • Waiting for long-term housing or SIL funding

Maple offers SIL homes across major regions in NSW, QLD, VIC, and WA, with popular hubs in:

  • Western Sydney (Parramatta, Blacktown, St Marys)
  • Greater Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth metro areas
  • Regional areas on request

See current SIL vacancies

Yes. If your current SIL arrangement isn’t meeting your needs or you’re unhappy with the level of support, you have the right to switch SIL providers. You’ll need to:

  • Review your service agreement for any notice periods
  • Discuss the change with your support coordinator or LAC

Find a new provider (like Maple) who better aligns with your goals, lifestyle, and needs

We can support you with a smooth transition into one of our SIL homes.

Yes. While many SIL participants live in shared homes, SIL can also be funded in single-person arrangements if your support needs justify it (e.g., behaviours of concern, high medical needs, or complex disability). This is sometimes called “individual SIL” or 1:1 support. Maple offers individual SIL options where appropriate.

SIL supports are flexible and reviewed regularly. If your goals or needs change:

  • Your support plan can be updated
  • We’ll work with you to adjust rosters or staffing levels
  • You can request a reassessment with the NDIA

Maple supports goal tracking, reviews, and adjustments to ensure your SIL experience continues to meet your needs.

A SIL service agreement is a formal document that outlines:

  • The supports you’ll receive
  • Your roster of care (who supports you, when, and how)
  • The roles and responsibilities of both you and your provider
  • Costs and billing in line with the NDIS Price Guide

This agreement must be signed before SIL services can begin.
