How a Simple Recycling Idea Empowered Our SIL Home to Earn, Learn, and Grow

In Supported Independent Living (SIL), the little things often make the biggest difference. At Maple Community Services, we create everyday opportunities that help our participants feel independent, confident, and connected. Sometimes, all it takes to make that happen is a wheelie bin and a few empty cans.

This is the story of how a simple Return and Earn initiative transformed daily life for two SIL residents at our Armoury SDA home. It gave them more than extra pocket money, it gave them pride, purpose, and a practical way to reach their goals.

How Return and Earn Began at Our Jordan Springs Specialist Disability Home

During a routine clean-up at the Armoury, Jordan Springs SDA residence, one of our team members spotted several garbage bags full of cans and bottles piling up in the garage. After chatting with the support workers, we learned that two SIL residents had been collecting the recyclables, even keeping bags in their rooms to avoid mix-ups.

That’s when the idea struck: let’s make it easier and safer for them to keep pursuing this passion.

Katie, one of our incredible team members, shared how the initiative began:

“Thus far the participants had been collecting cans from their own drinks and storing them in bags, either in the garage or even in their rooms. During a big clean-out, I spoke with them about better ways to store the recyclables. That’s when I asked if I could get them mini wheelie bins for the cans. Once the bins are full, a Support Worker takes them to the Return and Earn centre to recycle. The clients were quite excited about this idea.”

Why Small Changes Matter in Supported Independent Living

The flimsy plastic bags and cardboard boxes disappeared. In their place, we introduced bright, colourful mini wheelie bins, each chosen to match the participant’s style and preferences. Participants chose whether to store their bins in the garage or the kitchen, giving them a sense of ownership and control over their space.

The result? Excitement, independence, and an immediate boost in engagement.

From Cans to Confidence: What Our SIL Participants Gained

The Return and Earn scheme became more than a recycling activity, it became a source of empowerment.

One participant now saves up her earnings for bubble teas. She loves this fun reward and looks forward to it after a job well done. Another uses his refunds for social outings to the local pub, enjoying a good feed and time with his support worker. In both cases, it’s not just about money, it’s about choice and control.

Even better, the bins themselves became tools for independence. One participant, who uses a wheelchair, shared that the wheeled bins made it much easier to transport her recyclables to the car. This is a small accessibility detail with a big impact on her confidence and capability.

The Role of Maple’s Support Workers

None of this would’ve been possible without the encouragement and consistency of our incredible Support Workers. From helping participants organise their collections to ensuring safe storage and hygiene, their behind-the-scenes work has made this initiative a lasting success.

They don’t just show up. They champion the cause, celebrate progress, and make sure every step feels like a win.

What Return and Earn Teaches Us About SIL and the NDIS

Since starting the Return and Earn system, we’ve seen a noticeable increase in motivation, pride, and participation. Our participants are more engaged in their day-to-day activities, more aware of their goals, and more connected to the idea that they can work towards something meaningful. And all it takes is one can at a time.

It’s proof that in Supported Independent Living, real progress doesn’t always need to come from complex programs or grand gestures. It comes down to the right support at the right moment, and a belief in what’s possible.

Creating Opportunity Through Support

At Maple Community Services, we know that every individual has the potential to thrive. It’s our job to help create environments where that growth is not only possible but celebrated.

Whether it’s through empowering NDIS participants to manage their own goals or encouraging daily routines that build independence, we’re proud to be part of stories like these.

Because when our participants feel confident, capable, and supported, the results are extraordinary.
