Compare SIL Service Models: Which One is Right for You?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is one of the most popular and life-changing NDIS-funded supports for people with disability. But when it comes to choosing the right SIL service model, it’s not always easy to know where to start.

With so many SIL home options you might wondering how can you know which model suits your needs, goals, and lifestyle?

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the different SIL service models available under the NDIS. We break down how they work, and help you compare your options so you can make the most informed choice when it comes to NDIS housing and SIL supports.

Understanding SIL Under the NDIS

First things first, let’s understand what SIL is. Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS-funded support designed to help people with disability live as independently as possible, either in a shared home or their own residence. It provides funding for paid support workers who assist with day-to-day activities such as cooking, cleaning, personal care, medication management, and general safety supervision. SIL funding is not a home, it’s funding for supports in the home.

SIL also focuses on helping participants build life skills and confidence in managing their routines. While SIL funding covers the cost of support staff, it does not include rent or utility bills. However, it can be combined with other NDIS housing options like Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), community housing, or private rentals to create a holistic living arrangement tailored to each person’s needs.

SIL Service Models Explained

Let’s compare the main SIL service models available under the NDIS:

1. Shared SIL Home with 24/7 Onsite Support

  • What it is: You live in a home with other NDIS participants, with a team of support workers onsite 24/7.
  • Best for: People with moderate to high support needs who benefit from structure, routine, and consistent care.
  • Pros: Built-in community, shared routines, cost-effective staffing
  • Considerations: Less individual control over environment, shared space

This is the most common SIL model and is often offered in purpose-built SIL homes or NDIS housing with accessible features.

2. Individualised SIL (Solo Living)

  • What it is: You live alone in your own house or unit, and a support team provides SIL supports tailored to your needs—either full-time or scheduled.
  • Best for: Participants who value privacy and independence, but still require daily support
  • Pros: Maximum choice and control, quiet environment, flexible routines
  • Considerations: May require higher funding; limited social interaction unless planned

This is your own home, with your own support team. This model works well when paired with private rentals or family-owned NDIS-compliant homes.

3. Drop-In SIL Support

  • What it is: A support worker visits your home during the day for short periods to help with tasks like cooking, cleaning, or medication, rather than providing continuous care.
  • Best for: Participants with lower support needs who want to build independence
  • Pros: Affordable, promotes self-management
  • Considerations: Not suitable for participants needing supervision or overnight care

This features come-and-go support when needed. This is ideal for those transitioning out of full-time support into more independent NDIS housing.

4. Cluster Housing or Apartment Living Models

  • What it is: You live in a self-contained apartment within a complex that also houses other participants. Support workers are on-site or nearby to assist when needed.
  • Best for: People who want independent living but also access to community and quick support
  • Pros: Private space, shared services, a balance of independence and security
  • Considerations: Not as personalised as solo SIL; still some shared services

Think independent apartments with shared support that are are often integrated with NDIS SDA properties for high physical or cognitive needs.

How to Choose the Right SIL Model for You

Choosing the right SIL service model starts with understanding your individual support needs and goals. Consider whether you require round-the-clock assistance or just a few hours of support each day. And, think about whether you’re aiming for greater independence or feel more comfortable in a shared living environment. Your personal preferences matter too. Some people enjoy the social aspect of living with others, while others value privacy, routine, and quiet.

It’s also important to review your current NDIS plan to see what supports are already funded, and whether an occupational therapy assessment could help strengthen a request for a different SIL model. Your NDIS provider or support coordinator can guide you through these decisions, ensuring the SIL model you choose reflects your lifestyle, needs, and future aspirations.

Combining SIL with NDIS Housing Supports

One of the benefits of Supported Independent Living is its flexibility. It can be delivered across a range of housing environments to suit each participant’s unique circumstances. Whether you’re living in a purpose-built SIL home, an SDA-funded property, a private rental, a family residence, or social housing, SIL support can be tailored to meet your needs. The key is ensuring the environment aligns with your level of support, independence goals, and personal preferences.
