What is AFL Wheelchair?

Wheelchair AFL is an adapted version of the great game, that gives people with and without disability the opportunity to play. Based on AFL rules and played on a basketball court, this wheelchair sport is open to anyone to play!

AFL ABLE WITH MAPLE

The history of AFL Wheelchair.

Wheelchair Aussie Rules, initially developed by Kevin Faulkner from Para-Quad Tasmania, gained significant momentum through the collaborative efforts of Disability Sports Australia and the Australian Defence Force and its members. These organisations originally partnered to provide opportunities for people with disability to participate.

In collaboration with Disability Sports Australia, the AFL has been instrumental in further developing and supporting the sport now known as AFL Wheelchair with its state and territories and now governs the sport Nationally.

What makes AFL Wheelchair unique?

  • Indoor Court Setup: AFL Wheelchair is played on an indoor rectangular court, segmented like a netball court, with goal posts at each end. This setting provides a controlled environment suitable for wheelchair mobility.
  • Modified Rules: The game features two teams of five players each. The rules are adapted such as a handball replaces a kick and an underarm throw replaces a handball. This suits wheelchair use, ensuring fast-paced and exciting gameplay that mirrors the essence of traditional AFL.
  • Inclusivity: AFL Wheelchair is open for both individuals with and without disabilities, as well as anyone of any gender, promoting an inclusive environment where everyone can participate and enjoy the game.
  •
