How long does NDIS approval take?

Stepping into the world of the National Disability Insurance Scheme can be both hopeful and transformative. As you look to access the vital support you or your loved one needs, it’s important to consider how long the NDIS application takes and what to expect along the journey.

Your approval into the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can take up to 21 days from receiving the Access Request Form and any relevant supporting documents. If the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) requires further information about your application to clarify your eligibility, the process may take longer to complete.

Whether you’re a participant, a family member or an advocate, understanding the timelines and considerations involved is a crucial step towards realising the full potential of NDIS support. At Maple, we aim to unravel all the information you need to navigate the system with ease and confidence.

How long does it take for NDIS to be approved?

If you believe you meet the criteria for accessing funding through the NDIS, we want to assist you in navigating the process to the best of your ability. To begin, you will need to fill out and submit the NDIS Access Request Form that can either be sent to you by mail, email or you can download it here. Once complete, email the form to [email protected] along with any supporting information and documents that the NDIA will need to help them make a decision.

Once the NDIA receives your access request they will review it to ensure its validity and eligibility. If all the information is provided, the NDIA aims to respond to your request within 21 days from the date they receive your completed form.

If the NDIA requires more documentation, assessments or evidence of your eligibility they will reach out to you. While this may extend the processing time beyond the initial 21 days, they are dedicated to working with you every step of the way. For this reason, it’s important that you include all the information they will need in your initial application to ensure your access request is approved as quickly as possible.

How long does an NDIS planning meeting take?

Once the NDIA has reached a decision regarding your eligibility for NDIS funding, you will be notified through an official letter known as an ‘access decision’. If your application is successful, the NDIA will promptly get in touch with you to coordinate a planning meeting. During this meeting, the focus will be on discussing your support and funding needs.

To enhance your NDIS experience, you have the option to appoint a Plan Manager– someone familiar with the NDIS to help you to manage your NDIS plan. Additionally, you can opt for an Area Coordinator – someone who can help you to facilitate your supports, who can join you in your planning meeting to ensure you cover all aspects of your plan. This collaborative approach can be particularly beneficial if they are already acquainted with your unique situation.

Considering the individualised nature of these meetings, your planning meeting may exceed an hour depending on your circumstances. To help you prepare for this important discussion, the Maple team has put together a set of tips designed to make your first NDIS planning meeting a smoother and more informed experience.

How long does the NDIS plan take to approve?

Each NDIS plan approval is a personal journey, tailored to your unique circumstances. The NDIA is genuinely dedicated to getting your plan approved as quickly as they can, taking into account all the details that make your situation special. If, along the way, they need to reach out to you for further information or assessments, the process may take a little longer, but it’s all about ensuring everything aligns perfectly for you.

For those aged 7 years and above, the goal is to have your plan approved within 56 days from the time you became a participant. For those younger than 7, the typical timeline extends to 90 days. Keep in mind these are rough estimates, and the actual time may vary depending on the intricacies of your unique needs.

What considerations does NDIS make when approving a plan?

The goal of your NDIS funding is to create a personalised plan that addresses the specific needs and goals of each participant. The NDIA use these key considerations when assessing a plan:

  • Participants goals and aspirations – The NDIA focuses on understanding your personal goals and aspirations, so your plan can be designed to support you in achieving them.
  • Functional capacity – The NDIA will take into account your abilities and any limitations you may have due to your disability to help determine the level of support you require.
  • Current and future support needs – This involves assessing the types of supports and services necessary for you to lead a fulfilling life now and in the future.
  • Impact of disability – The NDIS assesses how the disability affects various aspects of your life, including social, economic and personal domains.
  • Health and medical information – This information helps to ensure that your plan addresses your healthcare needs adequately. This may involve input from your healthcare team.
  • Natural supports and community engagement – The NDIS will consider any natural supports available to you, such as family and community networks. Encouraging community engagement and social inclusion are important aspects of your planning process.
  • Cultural and linguistic considerations – Your cultural background and linguistic preferences are taken into account to ensure the plan respects and reflects your cultural identity.
  • Input from participants and their support network – The NDIS values your input, as well as your family, friends and advocates. Collaboration is integral for creating a plan that aligns with your aspirations.
  • Review of assessments – Any existing reports, assessments or documentation from your healthcare team help the NDIA to gain a comprehensive understanding of your situation.

Remember that the NDIA is on your side, working hard to fast track your NDIS approval while careful considering every detail that matters to you. If any steps are needed, they’ll reach out promptly, making sure you stay in the loop and are actively involved throughout the entire process. Your journey within the NDIS is as unique as you are, and they’re here to make it as smooth and personalised as possible.
