National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) 

People living with cerebral palsy in Australia can access a variety of supports tailored to their specific needs with the help of NDIS funding. The NDIS aims to enhance the independence, social participation and overall quality of life for people with disabilities. For those with CP, the available supports typically include:


  • Support for activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, eating, and mobility.
  • Assistive technology and equipment such as wheelchairs, walking frames, communication devices, or modifications to vehicles and homes.
  • Early childhood intervention services that help children to develop essential skills and mitigate developmental delays.
  • Support to engage in community, social and recreational activities.
  • Funding for therapeutic services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and other specialised services.
  • Education and employment services to support educational and employment goals.
  • Transport assistance, especially when a disability makes using public transport challenging.

Established with the goal of enhancing the lives of those affected by cerebral palsy, the organisation plays a significant role in both support and advocacy. 

Cerebral Palsy Australia - formerly known as the Australian Cerebral Palsy Association, is a national body representing organisations that provide services and support to people with cerebral palsy and their families. They also provide advocacy, research, funding, collaboration, information and educational programs.


Government initiatives

As well as the NDIS which is specifically designed for people living with disabilities, the Australian government also has other cerebral palsy support options that might be helpful to you. 

  • Medicare guarantees all citizens access to a wide range of health services. The Chronic Disease Management Plan, Medicare benefits schedule (MBS), Pharmaceutical benefits scheme and early interventions services for children are all plans under Medicare designed to support people with cerebral palsy.
  • Centrelink can offer a range of payment options for people with cerebral palsy as well as their parents or carers. These include Carer Allowance, Carer Payment (children), Child disability assistance payment, carer supplement, disability support pension and the Health care card.

How do I apply for the NDIS with cerebral palsy?

Follow these steps for a straightforward NDIS application process with a cerebral palsy diagnosis:

Access Request Form

First of all you will need to complete an access request form from the NDIS website. This form requires information about your age, residency, and your disability. If you are hesitant about how to fill out the form yourself you can contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on 1800 800 110 and they can talk you through the details of the form over the phone. 

Supporting Documentation

Your treating health professional can help you to fill out section 2 of the form. If you already have all the existing reports and assessments you can attach these to the form as evidence of your cerebral palsy diagnosis. 

Submit application

After gathering all of the supporting information you need and completing the form to the best of your ability, you can then submit them to the NDIS either by email at [email protected] or via post at GPO Box 700, Canberra, ACT 2601.
