The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides support for Australian citizens living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with the goal of enhancing the well-being of participants and encouraging their inclusion in the community.

NDIS autism eligibility requires an in-depth assessment and diagnosis from your healthcare team. Once your paediatrician and psychologist have determined which level of signs and symptoms you are experiencing then the NDIS will ascertain whether you are eligible for funding and how much support you will receive.

Do autistic people qualify for NDIS?

The NDIS offers a range of supports for people living with autism and it is currently the most common disability category funded by the NDIS. Once you have acquired an official diagnosis of autism from a multi-disciplinary team of professionals you can apply for funding with the NDIS. You must also be an Australian citizen or hold one of two visa types that allow you to reside in the country, as well as falling between the age of 7 and 65.

For the best chance of an accurate diagnosis your paediatrician/GP, psychiatrist, clinical psychologist as well as speech and language specialists can complete a series of assessments using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).

The current DSM-5 lists the signs and symptoms of ASD and determines how many of them must be observed in a patient for a confirmatory ASD diagnosis. The NDIS requires you to have these assessments completed within 2 years of your application.

Level 1 – requires support
Level 2 – requires substantial support
Level 3 – requires very substantial support

Autism Spectrum Disorder is inherently diverse and those with ASD tend to exhibit a wide range of strengths and challenges. Thankfully, the NDIS recognises this diversity within the autism spectrum and assesses eligibility on you or your loved ones functional capabilities across various domains. This can include your levels of communication, mobility, social interaction, learning, self care, self management and daily living skills.

While a diagnosis of autism at any level can potentially meet the NDIS access criteria, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) indicates that if you fall under level 2 or level 3 you automatically qualify for NDIS funding. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to access funding at level 1, however, each applicant’s unique situation will be thoroughly analysed on a case by case basis.

How do I apply for NDIS funding with Autism?

To apply for NDIS funding with an ASD diagnosis, you will need to fill out the access request form. If you’re not sure how to do this, the NDIA, a friend at Maple or even a trusted family member may be able to help you. Your GP will need to fill out the second part of the form and you can attach any relevant documentation and evidence of your disability.
