Supported Independent Living Explained

What is NDIS Supported Independent Living Accommodation?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a core support that funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). NDIS participants who meet the relevant criteria, receive funding for day-to-day assistance in a supported living environment. NDIS SIL accommodation refers to shared or individual living arrangements where participants receive tailored, 24/7 support. This support includes personal care, daily tasks, skill development, household activities, therapy access, and community participation.

SIL services can be delivered in your own home or within a shared supported accommodation setting. This will depend on your goals, support needs, and what’s included in your NDIS plan. The aim of SIL is to promote autonomy, build life skills, and empower individuals to live as independently as possible.

At Maple Community Services, we provide safe, accessible, and welcoming NDIS SIL housing options across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia. Our disability accommodation meets a wide range of support needs, lifestyle preferences, and funding plans. This NDIS supported independent living program offers a full range of services and resources to help participants lead fulfilling lives.

Assisted Accomodation

Our NDIS Supported Independent Living (SIL) program provides a range of disability housing options tailored to meet the unique support needs of each participant. Whether it’s a private apartment, shared home, or group living arrangement, our SIL accommodation ensures a safe, accessible, and comfortable environment that feels like home.

Daily Living Assistance

Our participants receive personalised daily living support from trained support workers who assist with various aspects of daily life. Assistance with daily tasks forms a core component of our SIL program. This kind of support can include help with personal hygiene, meal preparation, laundry, grocery shopping medication management, and mobility assistance.

Personalised SIL Planning

The hallmark of our SIL program is the emphasis on individualisation. Each participant has a unique care plan tailored to their specific needs, goals and preferences. This approach ensures that the support provided aligns with the individual’s abilities and aspirations. Each participant can then collaborate with their support workers and plan managers to assess their progress and adjust their goals as needed.

Social And Community Engagement

Our SIL program promotes social integration and community involvement. Our support workers help participants to access community resources, participate in social activities, and develop relationships. We encourage development and are committed to enhancing their overall well-being.

Skill Development

Participants are encouraged to develop their essential life skills. This can include budgeting, time management and self advocacy. We also support them with anything else they choose to work on. These skills can help individuals to make informed decisions and take control of their lives.

Am I Eligible for Supported Independent Living?

In Australia, Supported Independent Living is available to NDIS participants who require ongoing support to live more independently. SIL is typically suited to people with moderate to high support needs, including those with intellectual, physical, or psychosocial disabilities. While SIL and SDA are most commonly approved for individuals with higher levels of disability, those with milder disabilities may also be eligible, depending on their circumstances.

To access SIL funding, the NDIS must determine that the support is reasonable and necessary based on your individual goals, daily living challenges, and functional capacity. Eligibility is assessed as part of your NDIS plan, and typically includes participants who need regular assistance with personal care, household tasks, and community participation.

Supported Independent Living Application Process

The main goal of the application process for a Supported Independent Living program is to determine your needs for services. As such, you will need to be as involved as possible. After all, no one knows your needs better than you.

Many factors go into the evaluation of what is necessary and reasonable support in each specific case. The NDIS considers your or your loved one’s:

The NDIS relies on evidence and advice from Allied Health Professionals to determine if a participant is eligible for SIL or SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) funding. The areas that health professionals must address are the following:

SIL Application Requirements

You will require a written report by an Occupational Therapist which allows for up to 20 hours of funding within your NDIS Plan from the Improved Daily Living category. The report should address why there is no other access to suitable housing options or why your situation may have changed. An example of a situational change may be ageing parents who are no longer able to support the participant.

A psychology/GP report is also useful during the application process to indicate why the participant is a suitable candidate for SIL, and a Support Coordinator will need to submit a detailed housing solutions report with a summary of relevant information, as well as outlining a transition plan for the move.

Lastly, you or your loved one, family members, and any carers that help may be asked to discuss your or your loved one’s situation and disabilities. Thus, the evaluators get a broad view of you or your loved one’s needs, and abilities. Maple is happy to assist you throughout the application or reapplication process, to ensure the application is as complete and accurate as possible.

At the end of this process, the NDIS decides what types of services will benefit you or your loved one.

You can rely on Maple as experts in helping our clients gain SIL approval whenever it is appropriate. We are happy to help you with your or your loved one’s SIL referral. With our fast turnaround time on referrals, we can help you get started more quickly than most SIL providers.

How Do I Get Supported Independent Living Funding?

To access Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding through the NDIS, you or your loved one must submit a request during your NDIS planning process. A Support Coordinator will help guide you through each step, starting with a meeting to discuss your current needs, daily challenges, and long-term goals.

During your NDIS planning meeting, it’s important to clearly explain why SIL supports are reasonable and necessary for your specific situation. This may include evidence of your support needs, assessments from allied health professionals, and details about your living arrangements.

At Maple Community Services, our experienced support team is here to assist. If you have questions or need help preparing your application for SIL, we’re ready to provide personalised advice and ensure you feel confident navigating the process.

What Is the Difference Between SIL and SDA?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) are both NDIS-funded supports, but they serve different purposes.

A SIL provider manages daily support services—such as help with personal care, cooking, cleaning, and building life skills—for NDIS participants who need regular assistance to live independently.

SDA, on the other hand, is for individuals that require purpose built homes. These homes are designed with accessibility at the forefront. With accessible bathrooms, wide doorways, ramps and railways for ease and convenience. If you are an NDIS participant with extreme functional impairments or very high support needs you may receive specific SDA funding, in addition to your SIL funding.

While SIL pays for the support you receive, SDA covers the physical environment you live in. Some participants may receive both supports if they require specialised housing and ongoing daily assistance.

Maple has established SDA and SIL homes and partnership across Australia. Ensuring we are always able to accomodate our community, no matter their needs or where they are located.

What Is the Difference Between Supported Living and Independent Living?

Independent living and Supported Independent Living (SIL) are both housing options for people with disability under the NDIS. But, they differ in the level of support provided.

Independent living typically refers to individuals who are able to manage most daily tasks on their own. They require a lesser degree of support and may need minimal or occasional assistance.

In contrast, SIL is designed for NDIS participants who need regular, ongoing support with daily activities such as personal care, household tasks, medication management, and community access. Since NDIS participants eligible for SIL services often live with moderate to high support needs, they may benefit from additional therapies. This includes overnight assistance, occupational therapy or speech pathology. SIL offers this higher degree of support within a shared or individual living arrangement. And, ensures that participants can live more independently while receiving the care they need.

At Maple Community Services, our SIL specialists can help you explore vacancies and find a solution tailored to your individual needs and NDIS plan.
