Tips for Managing Down Syndrome
Are you living with Down syndrome and looking for ways to help you manage it?
Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, occurs when a baby is born with an extra Chromosome 21 or an extra part of Chromosome 21. Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition. It exists in all regions across the globe and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical attributes, and health.
Every year, we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st in order to spread awareness and celebrate our uniqueness. People with Down syndrome have a special knack for brightening up whatever room they may be in and deserve to be celebrated, recognised, and advocated for. That’s why we want to share with you some tips to help you manage your Down syndrome so you can focus on living life to the fullest.
There are 15,000 Australians living with Down syndrome making it one of the most common chromosomal conditions nationwide. As we learn more about the condition and implement better support systems, the lives of people with Down syndrome have drastically improved and lengthened over the past few decades. But we can always learn more.
What can I do to Manage my Down Syndrome?
Although there is no cure for Down syndrome there are many types of therapies that you can take part in and supports available to you in Australia. A combination of these therapies and supports can make your life more manageable, aid your learning and help you develop skills you need to help you live a more fulfilling life.
Every single person living with Down syndrome is completely unique. They will have different levels of ability, with their own sets of strengths and weaknesses. The professionals that will guide you in your therapy and supports will learn what your strengths are and help you build on any difficulties you may have.
Therapy
These are just some of the types of therapy that can help you manage:
- Speech – One on one or group speech therapy sessions to help you improve your speech and your use of language.
- Physical – A Physical Therapist can help you to improve your muscle strength, your balance, your coordination and your movement skills.
- Occupational – An Occupational Therapist can help you with your everyday movements, getting around and performing daily activities such as cleaning, cooking, working on the computer and more. Your OT can also recommend suitable apparatus around the home and when you’re out and about to aid you in your daily life.
- Educational therapy can assist you in your learning process and provide additional aid while you study.
