Overcoming Disability to Shine as a Mother

Motherhood is not easy, especially for those who live with disabilities. But Bonnie, a mother with schizoaffective disorder, shows us that nothing can stop her from loving and caring for her son, Sebastian. As we approach Mother’s Day, we want to honour the courage and joy of mothers like Bonnie.

Bonnie is a full-time mum to Sebastian, who is her pride and joy. Her husband, Abdul, works full-time and her family lives far away. She only has her mum in Sydney to help her out. Bonnie knows how hard it can be to juggle motherhood and disability. But she doesn’t let that stop her from bonding with her son. She attends a parenting course, takes Sebastian to a playgroup, and sees a therapist regularly.

Bonnie faces many obstacles as a mother with a disability. She often encounters people who doubt her parenting skills. But she doesn’t let them get to her. She knows that she has the support and resources she needs to be a great mum. She practices self-care and focuses on her strengths and abilities as a mother. She has also learned many useful skills, such as self-care, trigger awareness, and stress management.

Bonnie wants the best for her son. She hopes he will grow up happy and healthy, with a bright future ahead of him. She dreams of him being confident, well-rounded, and successful in his relationships and career. Bonnie is thankful for the support she gets from Maple and her support worker, who have helped her become more social and confident in her role as a mother.

At Maple services, we hold a special place in our hearts for mothers with disabilities in order to provide them the best support and care so that they can continue to be the loving, caring, and inspiring mothers that they are for their children. This Mother’s Day, let us celebrate the amazing mothers like Bonnie. They inspire us with their dedication to their children, despite their challenges. They are truly remarkable.
