Hearing impairment services

At Maple, we don’t want anyone living with a disability to experience life less than their peers. Thankfully, NDIS hearing impairment services are aimed to benefit people living with various levels of hearing loss in Australia.

Depending on your age you can receive funding from the Hearing Services Program (HSP) or the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for hearing services. The HSP funds hearing support for anyone who qualifies under the age of 26 and the NDIS funds reasonable and necessary support to anyone with a hearing impairment that is not available through the HSP.

How can hearing impairment services help someone with a disability?

Our clients who live with hearing disabilities benefit greatly from hearing impairment services that provide essential support and resources that enhance their quality of life. A wide range of hearing impairment services are now available to enable a participant to significantly improve their hearing ability, allowing them the advantage of greater communication opportunities and the ability to express themselves more effectively.

The type of hearing impairment services that someone would benefit from would greatly depend on their own circumstances, their level of impairment and their goals to live a fulfilling and joyful life. Thankfully, there are many options available and you have the autonomy to decide what works best for you.

Do I qualify for NDIS hearing impairment services?

NDIS hearing impairment eligibility relies on applicants receiving a hearing assessment from an audiologist and determines that a hearing impairment is equal to or greater than 65 decibels in the better ear and over the age of 21 to be eligible for funding.

You may also receive support via the HSP up until the age of 26. The NDIS will fund supports that are reasonable and necessary and not covered by HSP, however the same type of support can not be funded by both the NDIS or HSP.

The NDIS carefully considers your unique needs to ensure the support provided is truly beneficial in helping you achieve your goals. You can take our eligibility quiz to determine whether you are eligible here.

What hearing impairment support is available under NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides a wide range of support services for people living with hearing impairments, designed to enhance their communication skills, independence and overall quality of life.

One of the primary supports available under the NDIS includes comprehensive hearing assessments and the provision of hearing aids and other assistive listening devices. These assessments are conducted by qualified audiologists to determine the extent of the hearing loss and the most suitable devices to improve hearing. The NDIS can fund the purchase, fitting and ongoing maintenance of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive technologies.

To support you in developing and refining your communication skills, the NDIS offers access to speech and language therapy. These services can help to improve speech clarity, language comprehension and communication abilities. Your therapist can work with you to develop strategies that address specific challenges to improve your ability to engage and communicate effectively.
