Empowering Independence and Growth: Arsineh’s Journey with Maple Services
In a world where support can make all the difference, Maple Services shines as a guiding light for individuals seeking comprehensive community assistance. Arsineh Zakarian, a 54-year-old woman with an Intellectual disability, shares her unique perspective on how Maple’s unwavering support has transformed her life, empowering her to overcome challenges, pursue aspirations, and embrace independence.
Q: Tell us about yourself – your first name, age, and about your disability.
Arsineh: Hi, my name is Arsineh Zakarian, and I’m 54 years old. I have an Intellectual disability, which makes it difficult for me to concentrate and communicate my needs clearly. I’ve been working full-time in a pick-packing warehouse for 37 years. I live with my mother, Ribsema, who supports me with my daily needs.
Q: How do you manage your personal care needs, and what kind of assistance do you require?
Arsineh: My mother is my main support. She helps me with cooking dinner, washing dishes, cleaning, and doing laundry. Since I struggle with concentration, I need someone to guide and repeat steps until I feel comfortable doing them on my own.
Q: How do you balance your physical, mental, and emotional health?
Arsineh: I walk a lot daily, waking up at 4:00 am to walk to the train station and then travel to work. I also use public transport to get around. I plan to join a gym with my support worker, Rana, in a few months.
Q: What are some activities or hobbies you enjoy or would like to try?
Arsineh: I enjoy walking and admiring scenery. I’m looking forward to joining a nearby gym.
Q: How do you define support, and what does it mean to you?
Arsineh: Support is vital to my physical and mental well-being. Without my mother and support worker, I’d struggle with daily tasks and responsibilities.
Q: How do you seek and receive support from others?
Arsineh: I ask my mother or explain my needs to support workers. When I’m at shops, I seek assistance from workers by explaining slowly.
Q: How has support helped you overcome challenges or achieve goals in your life?
Arsineh: With the help of my mother and support worker, I learned the alphabet, improving my confidence and ability to sign my name on paperwork.
Q: How do you measure the impact of support on your well-being and happiness?
Arsineh: Support has made me more confident in going to shops and asking for assistance.
Q: How do you access the community, and what kind of social support do you have or need?
Arsineh: Using public transport requires a support worker’s car for convenience in getting around and carrying purchases.
Q: How has Maple or Maple’s Support Network assisted you on your NDIS Journey?
Arsineh: Maple’s team is informative and attentive. They matched me with a compatible support worker who understood my needs. I’m extremely satisfied with Maple and my support worker.
